The straight fell of trees is the removal of trees as a single unit. Straight felling will be limited to such situations that pose zero risk of damage to any property or persons whatsoever. Only when all risks have been taken into account, such as telephone and power cables not crossing through and are clear of the tree, the tree has a natural lean towards the felling direction or is standing straight and balanced, at least 5m clearance from buildings or any other structure that may be damaged, then the tree can be felled from ground level.
The Hedge Wizard tree surgeons in Meanwood, Leeds provide this service when a tree has to be taken down and is in an awkward location, with multiple targets (structures that can be damaged). This means that the tree needs to be felled in sections using advanced rigging techniques and in some occasions using a crane.
The process begins by a climber installing a rigging line in the top of the tree overhanging an appropriate lowering point. Then the tree surgeon will begin from the bottom of the tree crown and attach the lowering rope to the first branch from the crown break. The surgeon will then make a controlled cut in the direction that the tree surgeon wants the branch to move. Finally it is over to the groundsmen to lower the branch in a safe and controlled manner to the ground. This is then processed and extracted from the garden and fed into the wood chipper. This process is repeated until the tree surgeon has reached the top of the tree and is only left with a standing straight stem.
The remaining tree will either be cut into small manageable sections and thrown to the ground, or lowered off its self using blocks and pulleys.
Pollarding is a technique used by tree surgeons for a number of reasons, if the tree has significant die back in the canopy and is deteriorating rapidly, pollarding would be a good option. To pollard a tree means to remove the entire crown of the tree to the main fork of the trunk, in the case of an unhealthy tree, this would give the tree a second fighting chance as that now the tree has no high canopy to pump water and nutrients into, the roots are not working as hard and the tree is significantly less stressed.
This allows the tree to throw out epicormic shoots throughout the remaining trunk.
Stump removal involves complete removal of the stump and any lateral roots belonging to the tree. This is achieved either using hand tools or a machine (stump grinder).
Stump grinding involves the removal of stump to a specified depth, generally between 150mm and 300mm. Upon completion of stump removal, the remaining hole will be back-filled with soil or grinding waste to leave a level minimal trace of the work. The complete removal of a tree trunk is a job for and only for a stump grinder, this is a machine with carbine tipped teeth attached to a large rotating wheel with the teeth attached at different angles at sequence all around the wheel. This creates a bread knife affect.
The spinning wheel is used to scrape 2mm on every slice it makes, this machine is operated by one man, once the stump has turned into mulch and a hole has replaced the tree stump, the hole is then filled back in with the mulch.
Each tree will be individually considered in relation to the shape, size, character, condition, site and species of tree. All operations will be completed leaving each tree in an acceptable, well-balanced and safe condition. Each branch will be removed using the ABC cut method where risk of tearing is reduced.
All final cuts will be made at the branch collar, with the branch collar remaining intact. Under no circumstances will any flush cuts be made. All cuts will be made to the standards set out in the guidelines BS3998.
All large limbs will be lowered by ropes and slings to avoid damage to the tree and its surroundings. We will ensure that all sections fall to the ground in a controlled manner. Dead, diseased or damaged branches will be pruned back to the corresponding branch collar. In the case of crossed rubbing branches, the branches will be assessed, pruned or removed appropriately, whilst ensuring that a reasonable overall shape is maintained

Small Hedge trimming is mostly done by gardeners but this is a service that The Hedge Wizard also undertakes. We can trim a small hedge or shrub back into a nice clean and tidy shape but we are more often called in to deal with large hedges in the Leeds area, such as a row of conifers, where we reduce them to manageable proportions. This is done to the desired height of the customer, creating a straight line at the top or a rounded more natural affect. All sides of the hedge are trimmed and pruned to create a nice neat and tidy looking hedge.
